WHO OPERATES A CHAINSAW AT 8AM IN THE MORNING??
First day of the semester break and I was awoken, much to my despair, by the recurring roar of a chainsaw next door. To sleep or not to sleep? I didn’t have a choice. Half-awake, I wandered out of bed blindly and fumbled my way down the stairs to make some toast. It was one of those mornings.
Sleep is a precious gift for us uni students, and something we usually don’t get enough of. How much sleep should we get? About 9 hours on average, according to the National Sleep Foundation. But do us uni students get anywhere near this amount? Based on how many people I see nodding off in the 8am electrical lecture, I’d say no.
Why is it so hard to sleep, you might ask? Well.
The number one reason why I don’t get enough sleep is that I simply feel that there are not enough hours in the day. On some days of the week I won’t get home until 5, and by the time I’ve gone for a run/ tutored/ worked on assignments/ studied, its near 11pm or later. By that point of the night I need a break and so I watch episodes of something chill, but then suddenly its 11:30 and I need to go to sleep. I wake up at 7 the next day and here we go again. So I probably average about 8 hours each day.
I consider myself lucky in comparison to some of my other friends who live out in Howick and have to wake up at 5:30 to get to uni for the first lecture. These friends probably only get 7 hours sleep or less. With this in mind, I would like to request that the Earth turn slower during semester, so that we can have time for sleep AND uni.
Thankfully it is the mid-semester break now, and so the opportunity to sleep in and be lazy has arrived. However, this is proving harder than I thought it would be. I find that I become very easily distracted from 10pm onwards, by food, and tv series, and the internet….and because I don’t HAVE to get up tomorrow, I am quite complacent to stay up as late as possible. And then I get woken up by someone operating a chainsaw at 8am and I’m getting even less sleep than usual. It is really quite counter-productive.
Anyway there are two main points to this blog. Firstly, if you were the guy operating the chainsaw at 8am this morning, please cut down some trees somewhere else. Secondly, never underestimate the power of a good sleep. Be wise, and shut those eyes! Count some sheep and go to sleep.

Let’s be honest, tonight’s going to be another late night. 😛
